Why It Matters…

Domestic violence (DV) is a widespread public health and safety issue that affects individuals, families, and communities across the United States. It impacts people of all backgrounds, but women and children are disproportionately affected.

🔴 Prevalence

  • Nearly 1 in 4 women in the United States experience severe intimate partner violence in their lifetime.

  • Approximately 1 in 3 women experience some form of physical violence by an intimate partner.

🔴 Impact on Children

  • An estimated 15.5 million children in the U.S. live in homes where domestic violence has occurred at least once.

  • Children exposed to domestic violence are more likely to experience emotional, behavioral, and developmental challenges.

🔴 Homicide & Safety Risks

  • On average, more than 3 women are killed each day in the U.S. by an intimate partner.

  • The presence of a firearm in a domestic violence situation increases the risk of homicide by 500%.

🔴 Economic & Housing Instability

  • Domestic violence is one of the leading causes of homelessness among women and children.

  • Survivors often face barriers to stable housing, employment, and financial independence.

🔴 Justice-Involved Individuals

  • Many justice-involved women have histories of domestic violence and trauma.

  • Lack of support and safe resources often contributes to cycles of reentry, instability, and continued victimization.

💜 Why This Matters

Domestic violence is not just a personal issue—it is a cycle that impacts generations. Without access to safe housing, support services, and trauma-informed care, survivors are often forced to return to unsafe environments.

Because You Matter Outreach is committed to breaking this cycle by providing support, stability, and pathways to healing.
